Incomplete art for incomplete pay: Dubai artists protest pay gap

Half-completed paintings went on display in Dubai as part of a campaign calling for an end to the gender pay gap.Artworks created by 19 women found a platform at the World Art Dubai fair at an exhibition titled Art Gap. Citing a study by the University of Oxford, which concluded that women in art get paid 47.6 percent less than their male counterparts, the artists created paintings that are only 52.6 percent complete. Half of each canvas was deliberately left blank as a sign of protest.

The point is “to make people aware of, this is how much you’re paying for, although the work is an entire canvas, but you’re paying for this much,” said Batool Jafari, the curator of World Art Dubai. The campaign, sponsored by Standard Chartered Bank, is hoping to take Art Gap all over the world and across various sectors where the pay gap exists.
