Schurter and Forster shore up lead in Cape Epic mountain bike race

Nino Schurter and Lars Forster extended their overall lead in the Cape Epic Mountain Bike race with a second-place finish in Stage 6 behind Louis Meija of Colombia and Johnny Cattaneo of Italy who won the stage.Team Trek Selle San Marco’s Damiano Ferraro and Samuele Porro, both from Italy, rounded out third place on the day after falling from the lead when Porro took a nasty spill and suffered a mechanical problem.

The sixth stage was characterized by 89 kilometres (55 miles) of picturesque views around the Western Cape of South Africa with a 2,650 metre (8,700 foot) climb that started and ended at Stellenbosch University. Going into Sunday’s (March 24) finale, Schurter and Forster lead Manuel Fumic (Germany) and Henrique Avancini (Brazil), who are eight minutes back, followed by Ferraro and Porro who are third overall, 17 minutes behind the leaders.
