Indonesia stepping up rescue, search for people missing in flood

The Indonesian government has sent nearly 4,000 rescuers to respond to the flood-triggered disaster in the eastern province of Papua, as the evacuation of flood-stricken people from the affected areas continues. The natural disaster hit the Jayapura district during the weekend, leaving 89 dead, 159 other people injured, and 74 missing. According to the local government, the flood struck at least 34 villages, victimizing a total of 6,831 people who are in urgent need of medical treatment or relief supplies. Mackbon said that the government has established seven temporary shelters in the affected areas, and it is planning to build more such shelters. Many victims swarmed to the shelters to get food and other necessities.
