Golden pheasant populations see steady growth in central China

Golden pheasant populations have grown steadily in the area of Sanmenxia City, central China’s Henan Province. Peculiar to China, the Golden pheasant is called “little phoenix” for its bright and eye-catching colors. It is the national second-class protected animal and the prototype of the Chinese saying “Golden Rooster Crows”, meaning “the cock announces the arrival of dawn”. Sanmenxia City is located in one of the most important nesting places for golden pheasants. In the Ganshan National Forest Park of Sanmenxia City, as many as 1,000 golden pheasants have been found. It is learned that the natural enemies of golden pheasants include eagles, wildcats and foxes. It is a kind of resident birds with limited flying capabilities. It can fly about 200 meters at most.

The steady growth of golden pheasant population in the area of Sanmenxia City can be attributed to a strong sense of protection the local people.
