2 dead, 17 missing after landslide triggers house collapse in north China

A landslide triggered a house collapse in north China’s Shanxi Province, leaving two people dead and 17 others missing.

The accident happened around 18:10 Friday in the township of Zaoling in Linfen city, where a landslide toppled two residential buildings and a public bathhouse. So far, 13 people have been pulled out of the debris, but two of them were found dead.

The rescuers are searching for the missing people, the local government said. More than 600 people, including public security officers, armed police, emergency rescue and medical staff, are participating in the rescue. Heavy equipment cannot be used at the site due to the geological conditions. The rescuers have to search for the missing persons by hand in the debris, with the help of life detection instruments and rescue dogs.
