Seven deaths reported in several accidents

A group that was fleeing after robbing a van has been taken into custody. Meanwhile, seven deaths were reported in several motor accidents that happened yesterday.

A group that was fleeing after robbing a van was taken into custody in the Ranaala area in Nawagamuwa. The raid was carried out based on information received by officials of the Organized Crimes Prevention Division. Three suspects who had robbed the van and was taking the owner in the same vehicle after tying his feet and hands were arrested. Two more suspects related to the incident were thereafter taken into custody. The suspects are residents of Embilipitiya, Meegoda, Ranala, Naranwala and Kataragama areas. They were due to be produced in Homagama Magistrate’s Court.

In the meantime seven were killed in motor accidents that happened in the Sammanthurai, Kilinochchi, Athurugiriya and Marawila areas.

In a motor accident that occurred in the 24 post area along the Mulatiyana-Mawarala road, a father of three was killed. He was a carpenter by profession and was returning home after completing his work in the night. Due to lack of buses, he was travelling in a tractor transporting tea leaves. The tractor veered off the road resulting in an accident. Another sustained injuries in this accident.

Three sustained critical injuries after a container toppled near a bridge in the Galewela town. A shop was also damaged in this accident. The container was loaded with maize. It is revealed that the driver had been unable to control the speed of the vehicle. Heavy traffic congestion was reported in the Galewela town following the accident that happened this morning.
