China Media Group launches robot assistant to help cover ‘two sessions’

For the first time ever, the China Media Group has put into use a special robot assistant to help reporters cover the country’s annual “two sessions”. The “two sessions” refer to the second session of the 13th National People’s Congress, which will start on March 5, and the 2nd session of the 13th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, which opened on Sunday afternoon in Beijing. Xiaodu, the AI-powered, customized robot, will be working at the media center for this year’s “two sessions”.

It has spent a lot time acquiring knowledge about the “two sessions” and is able to answer questions from journalists and media personnel with ease. Xiaodu, built by search engine giant Baidu, can even predict the hot topics of upcoming press conferences, by analyzing relevant articles and comments online. In addition, the AI bot can provide a host of other services, including providing location information and directions, conducting facial recognition, and even taking photographs.
