Dogs take the spotlight at Brazil’s dog carnival parade

A canine carnival took to the streets of Rio de Janeiro as pet lovers paraded their four legged friends in the city’s annual pooch parade. The yearly festival attracts dogs of all shapes and sizes and dressed by their owners as everything from pink fairies to superheroes and from clowns to gypsies.

The event is named Blocao – a play on words in Portuguese combining the word ‘bloco’ for street party and ‘cao’ for dog. The parade is a favourite among many residents in the Barra da Tijuca area in Rio’s west and forms part of the internationally famous annual carnival. More than six million people are expected to hit the streets of Rio, taking part in hundreds of carnival celebrations.
