Free visa for tourists from selected countries

The cabinet of Ministers has granted approval to a proposal to issue free visa for visitors coming from several selected countries in a bid to attract more tourists to the island nation.

Minister of Tourism, John Amaratunga has submitted the cabinet memorandum in this regard. Accordingly, Thailand tourists will be given free visa for six months from the 1st of April. The aim of the initiative is to attract more Thailand tourists as Sri Lanka hosts a range of religious and cultural programs in Wesak and Poson months. The new offer will be valid for tourists from the EU, Australia, the UK, Singapore, New Zealand and some other countries.
The cabinet also granted approval to a proposal to set up a drug manufacturing zone in the Hambantota area. The aim of the initiative is to slash foreign currency outflowing to other countries to import drugs. The cabinet memorandum was submitted by Minister Rajitha Senaratne.
Meanwhile, the cabinet of Ministers endorsed a draft bill to insert a new clause to the Immigration and Emigration Act. Minister Vajira Abeywardena has brought the cabinet proposal.
The sub-ministerial committee recommendation to entrust power to linear Ministries to disclose information on cabinet decisions under the Right to Information Act was also given approval.
