23 individuals who were engaged in illicit gem mining have been taken into custody. The arrests were made by the Police Special Task Force.
Officials of the Police Special Task Force apprehended the suspects while they were engaged in illicit gem mining in the Kudagama area in Avissawella in affiliation to the Kelani River. Several utensils used for the mining of gems were also recovered.
The suspects were due to be handed over to the Eheliyagoda National Gem and Jewellery Authority.
