Grama Shakthi comes to the town from the village

President Maithripala Sirisena has decided to launch a Grama Shakthi National Week to expedite the process of distribution benefits of the Grama Shakthi People’s Movement this year. Accordingly the benefits of the Grama Shakthi People’s Movement are due to be distributed for a week with effect from today.

The Western Province Steering Committee meeting of Gramashakthi People’s Movement was held today under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena. It was held centering the Wilimbula Henegama area today. A sum of 450 million rupees has been allocated for the implementation of the Grama Shakthi People’s Movement within the Western Province in 2019. Joining in this function, the President referred to the importance of taking action targeting the poverty stricken urban population through the Grama Shakthi People’s Movement in the future.

In this instance the President gave instructions to the officials to take initiatives to reduce the fee levied for the registration of small business with the intention of uplifting the local small and medium entrepreneurs. 117 million rupees is being given for the launch of the Grama Shakthi People’s Movement within the Colombo District in the year 2019. 117 million rupees has been given on behalf of the Gampaha District. The allocation made for the Kalutara District which is higher in poverty within the Western Province is 216 million rupees. The President pointed out that it is the onus of the sectors related to spend properly all the grants for programmes to upgrade the livelihoods of the low income families in the areas concerned.

During today’s steering committee meeting, discussions centred at length on the solutions that could be found to issues that surface in the launch of the Grama Shakthi People’s Movement within the Western Province. Special attention was focused on the issue with respect to Centres that market the products and remove the backward issues of the people and encourage them.

On this occasion an agreement was signed between two Grama Shakthi Committees for the first time to increase the incentive generation through the growth of cooperation between the members. This gives an opportunity to for the resolution of many problems that Puwakpitiya South Grama Shakthi Society of Avissawella had encountered. Former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunge and many Parliamentarians joined in this occasion.

In the meantime, the Grama Shakthi Rural programmes of the Western Province was launched in the Dompe Walaramba Production Village in Gampaha, under the patronage of the President. Eight months have passed since the launch of the Walaramba Henegama Abhiman Grama Shakthi People’s Society within the Dompe Divisional Secretariat Division. 72 of the 185 families within the Division have joined in the Grama Shakthi movement. Noteworthy is the concreting of the sub roads of the village through the grants given for the Grama Shakthi People’s Movement. The President who met the members of the Walaramba Abhiman Grama Shakthi People’s Movement exchanged pleasantries with them inquiring into their problems. The President also handed over road development equipment sets worth 18.5 million rupees on their behalf.
