North and East farmers to be compensated

Farmers in the Northern and Eastern Provinces who were affected by flooding and drought will be paid compensations from day after tomorrow.

The inaugural session to provide compensations will be held under the patronage of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. More than 22,500   acres of land in the two Provinces was affected by the inclement weather. The Agricultural Insurance Board stated that all the farmers in the North and East can be paid compensations before March.

Minister P. Harrison made an inspection tour in the Kilinochchi and Mullaithivu districts to observe obliterated land blocks. The government has set aside 400 million rupees to pay compensations to the farmers. 40,000 rupees will be paid per acre under the scheme. The program to provide compensations will be held on the 14th, 15th and 16th of this month.
