Transplantingof bone marrow to commence at the Maharagama Apeksha Hospital

The government is preparing to begin contributing to commence the transplanting of bone marrow at the Maharagama Apeksha Hospital.
A special discussion regarding this program was held recently at the Health Ministry under the aegis of Minister of Health, Indigenous Medicine, Dr. Rajitha Senaratne. The Apeksha Hospital has so far carried out self-contained bone marrow transplants. The Health Ministry said that Hospital has so far carried out 50 skeletal transplants. Consultant doctors requested that the number of rooms to house patients who are undergoing bone marrow transplant be increased to eight.
The Minister said that steps will be taken to provide financial assistance for this purpose. It was also decided to increase the number of specialist doctors in cancer. Dr. Prasad Abeysinghe said that his doctors are ready to commence a bone marrow transplant program this year.
A special training has been provided to doctors and members of the staff at the St. Vincent’s Hospital in Australia.
