Malaysia’s new king inspects honour guards, to formally take the throne

Malaysia’s Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah inspected a guard of honour during a ceremony held at the parliament courtyard, before he was formally sworn in as the country’s new king later in the day. Sultan Abdullah is taking over from former King Muhammad V, after he stepped down unexpectedly on Jan. 6 after just two years on the throne — the first time a Malaysian monarch has stepped down before completing their five-year tenure. No reason was given for the resignation.

The country’s nine royal households take turns to provide a king, who is chosen through a vote in at Council of Rulers. Malaysia is a constitutional monarchy and the king assumes a largely ceremonial role, including acting as custodian of Islam in the Muslim-majority country.
