Robotic dog uses AI to learn new tricks

Is it right to kick a robot when it’s down? It is when the robot in question is being tested on whether it can get itself back on its feet. The four-legged ANYmal robot is the size of a large dog at 70cm when standing and last year was deployed on an offshore convertor platform in the North Sea.The company behind the robot, ANYbot, released footage of it climbing stairs and navigating the complex environment of the rig while inspecting industrial instruments using a camera mounted on a moveable arm.Now the developer, a spin-off company from ETH Zurich, says ANYmal can pick itself up again, even when kicked to the ground. The developers say designing control algorithms for robots like ANYmal presents unique challenges because of its dynamically balancing system. Its contact points change over time and with the manouevre being executed.ANYmal’s developers have used a reinforcement learning method, which allows the control algorithm to evolve.
