Moenchengladbach leave it late to beat Augsburg

Borussia Moenchengladbach secured a 2-0 home win over Augsburg to move into second place in the Bundesliga standings with a better goal difference than Bayern Munich, who play Stuttgart on Sunday. Moenchengladbach had several chances in the first half but were denied by Augsburg goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, his best effort coming in the 44th minute when he made a fine save to keep out Jonas Hofmann’s penalty. Moenchengladbach finally broke the deadlock in the 78th minute when Kobel parried away Michael Lang’s shot, only for Oscar Wendt to fire in a low shot off the rebound.Patrick Hermann sealed the victory for Dieter Hecking’s side in the final minute with a powerful shot from distance into the top corner.Borussia Dortmund, who thrashed Hanover 5-1 in their game, lead the Bundesliga standings with 48 points, nine ahead of Borussia Moenchengladbach and Bayern Munich.
