President assures to take necessary future steps to increase welfare of Sri Lankans living in the Philippines

President Maithripala Sirisena has said that another special programme will be implemented to further strengthen the process of the narcotics racket which is a serious challenge to the country. Addressing the Sri Lankan community in the Philippines the President pointed out it would be effective from January.

President Maithripala Sirisena who is visiting the Philippines at the invitation of the President of that country met the Sri Lankan community living in the Philippines in Manila yesterday. Among those who joined in the meeting includes students pursuing higher education and professionals. They presented their problems to the President.

The President emphasized that he would take several measures on behalf of the welfare of Sri Lankans living in the Philippines. Problems related to students pursuing higher education and visas were presented. The President instructed them to direct all these issues to the Sri Lankan Ambassador in the Philippines. The President stressed that action will be taken to sort out all these issues after discussions with the Philippines Government. The President lauded the dedication of the Philippines President and the Government against the drug racket. Drug trafficking is also a serious challenge to Sri Lanka. The President apprised the Sri Lankans living in the Philippines of a broad programme that is in place to crackdown the menace.

The President also took the initiative of bilateral agreements reached by Sri Lanka and the Philippines during this tour. The President further emphasized that he would be dedicated to successfully implementing them.
