Nyjah Huston underlines Olympic potential with skateboarding victory

California’s Nylan Huston showed why he is considered a strong contender for Olympic gold in 2020 by defending his title at the World Skate SLS 2018 Championship. Huston, now a five-time champion, faced fierce competition from 21-year-old Brazilian Kelvin Hoefler in front of a loud Rio crowd. There were 12 scores of 9+ in the men’s competition and only a small difference of 0.6 separated the top two boarders.Skateboarding is one of the sports added to the Tokyo Olympics 2020 and both Huston and Hoefler look in the kind of form that could win them a gold medal. In the women’s event Japan’s Aori Nishimura showed why she could also walk away with gold at her home Olympics with a victory at Sunday’s event. Like Huston, Nishimura was forced to take on a rival with passionate hometown backing in the form of Leticia Boni. The Brazilian scored a nine, but Aori’s final run saw her overhaul Boni and win by just 0.1.
