Pressure test on buoyancy material for new manned submersible completed

The buoyancy material that will be used to build China’s 10,000-meter-level manned submersible has passed a deep-sea pressure test carried out at a lab in south China’s Hainan Province. The test marks one step closer to the goal of testing China’s 10,000-meter-level manned submersible in the Mariana Trench by 2020. The pressures in the latest test on the 1,600 pieces of the buoyancy material inside the lab’s high pressure cylinder were gradually mounted up to around 120 mpa, which is equivalent to 1,200 pa of pressure in air, which simulated the high-pressure environment 12,000 meters undersea. The 1,600 pieces remained at the pressure inside the cylinder for 24 hours. The buoyancy materials are currently undergoing tests on other key parameters of their physical properties, including water absorption rate, according to the participating scientists. In the next step the scientists will test the materials’ anti-fatigue capability to ensure that the submersible can dive and surface safely.
