French-Canadian team Village Monde had the perfect start to the new year by winning one of the world’s more unsual sailing races, the Kraken Cup, in the warm blue waters of the Zanzibar Archipelago, Tanzania. The eight-day competition featured sailors racing 500km around the coast of Tanzania, east Africa, in traditional Tanzanian fishing ships known as ngalawas.Race organiser, Dylan Delahunt, explained one of he aims of the Kraken Cup was to put ngalawas to the test in the open sea.

The competition ran from January 1 – 8 and featured 22 teams and 66 sailors from around the world. The harsh nature of the race saw sailors having to find somewhere to sleep each night, with many toughing it out on uninhabited islands.
