Indian town gears up for world’s largest religious festival

Chand Nath Pandey has been performing prayers in the holy northern Indian town of Prayagraj for decades.

But it is the mention of the grand Kumbh Mela that brings a shine to his eyes.

Pandey is a Hindu priest who has been helping generations of pilgrims perform various prayer rituals from the last rites of their forefathers to first prayers for a new born.

The prayers are held at the banks of the confluence of the rivers Ganges and Yamuna and also the mythical Saraswati river, which the pious believe appears in a metaphysical form.

It is during the Kumbh Melas when Pandey’s life and profession really comes alive as he attends to hundreds of devotees, who pay him fees out of their own wishes, on a daily basis.
