President instructs officials to moot a programme to save school children from drug peddlers

President Maithripala Sirisena has given instructions to the necessary sectors to implement a streamlined programme to eliminate trafficking in drugs targeting school children.
The President has also informed these officials to immediately craft regulations needed to crackdown on drug rackets being carried out in the surroundings of the school. The President issued these instructions at a discussion held at the Presidential Secretariat today with respect to minimizing the use of drugs.
The President said that he had received information on children being addicted to drugs due to the rackets that are being carried in school environs. President Maithripala Sirisena instructed the Inspector General of Police not to leave room for such a disaster to surface.
The Government is already implementing a number of programmes to control the drug menace. The Presidential Media Division mentioned the task of amending laws and regulations to boos this programme is already in place. Action will be taken to solicit the support of all institutions with respect to narcotics.
Attention was also drawn at this discussion to the security programme that is in place with regard to Prisons.
State officials including Defence Secretary Hemasiri Fernando were present at this discussion.
