Invasive species of mussel threatens UK oysters

Researchers say the Asian Date Mussel, a listed invasive species, has arrived in the UK’s coastal waters, threatening British native oysters and mussels. A single Senhousia mussel discovered by accident on a south coast beach has led to the discovery of many living examples in the same area. The Asian date mussel was originally found in the western Pacific between Siberia and Singapore but it has migrated around the world with confirmed sightings in Australia and New Zealand, the Mediterranean and now the UK. The impact on biologically important species such as seagrass depends on the size of the Asian date mussel population, which can quickly explode and decline.
