Testing the Times Square crystal ball before it drops at midnight

Organizers of the Times Square New Year’s Eve celebration made final preparations for the big event by testing the iconic crystal ball.The ball drop ceremony, which will ring in the new year, is the highlight of the event.Event organizers did a mock countdown and flipped a giant switch that turned on the lights of the flashy ball that is comprised of 32,000 Philips LED lights and more than 2,000 Waterford crystals.Leading up to the midnight ceremony, when the crystal ball will descend from the 130-foot poll, stars from around the world are scheduled to entertain the one million people gathered at the square for six hours.Organizers estimate that more than 190 million Americans, will tune in to the Times Square celebration on television. Globally more than one billion people are estimated to watch the ceremony.
