Immediate relief to flood victims in the North

The Disaster Management Centre states that more than 773,343 people have been affected by the bad weather prevailing in the Northern Province. It is reported that one death has occurred due to the inclement weather situation.
The government says necessary funds have been allocated to provide immediate relief to the affected people. The tri forces, police and Disaster Management officials are taking measures to provide relief to the displaced people in the North. The tri forces engaged in rescuing people who are trapped in flooding. The largest number of people affected by the flooding is reported from the Kilinochchi district.
Minister of Public Administration and Disaster Management Ranjith Maddumabandara undertook a tour in affected areas today to inspect relief activities being conducted. The victims of the adverse weather have been accommodated at temporary shelters and provided with basic requirements. Three sluice gates of the Kida-varan-kulama tank of Vavuniya have been opened with increasing water levels. Our correspondents reported that all tanks in Vavuniya are nearing spill levels due to the heavy rainfall. The government has taken measures to provide cooked meals and other facilities to the displaced people. The Army was able to rescue a number of victims caught up with flooding caused by breaking up of dams of some tanks in the North.
The Army personnel took steps to evacuate people who were living in the vicinity of Olu-madu weva and Pudu-machchi-naadu-kulam tank in Kilinochchi. Deputy Director of the Disaster Management Center, Pradeep Kodippili said that people who have been displaced in the North are being attended by different arms of government and provided with basic necessities.
