Life-sized puppet elephants join the Circus in London

After touring the world visiting countries including the United States and Australia “Circus 1903” has landed in London, celebrating the golden age of circus acts. But whilst the circus harks back to a time when lions, bears and zebras would have been one of the main draws, this time around there are no live animals at all.Instead, puppet director and designer Mervyn Miller has created life-sized elephants made from aluminium and plastic mesh, operated by performers. The British Veterinary Association says the use of puppets is on trend with a decline in circuses using wild animals over the last twenty years. Showing at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall, “Circus 1903”, runs through January 5, 2019.
