‘Pineapple leather’ offers sustainable, vegan alternative

Pineapples aren’t just a delicious fruit, they could be your next pair of shoes. Made from the discarded leaves of the pineapples, Piñatex is novel new textile that could sound the death knell for traditional leather production. It was created by Spanish entrepreneur Dr. Carmen Hijosa who abandoned a career in leathergoods design and manufacture after seeing the environmental toll of mass leather production and chemical tanning. Over eight years of development and experimentation, Hijosa developed a method to turn the long fibres inside the leaves into a leather-like material.Hijosa, who founded the company Ananas Anam to market Piñatex, works with pineapple farmers in the Philippines who harvest and strip the fibres from the leaves. This raw material is then shipped to Spain where it’s then finished into Piñatex using a patented technique.
