Exercising to help the environment while improving your health

Eco-exercise is the latest trend for those conscious of both their health and the environment.

London-based gym Terra Hale is built with recycled material and uses innovative spin equipment that allows those exercising to generate electricity for the centre by pedalling.

According to its creator, Michael Homolo, the gym is the eco-friendliest in the city. He told Reuters: “All the gym is designed from recycled materials so we’ve used reclaimed scaffolding boards on the walls and ceilings.

We’ve got recycled rubber on the floor; the weight plates are again from recycled rubber.

Depending on how many people are taking part, an eco-spin class can create up to 3,000 watts of power, which is enough electricity to run the lights at the gym for up to 12 hours.

The company is looking for more investment to expand their business and has had interest in taking their concept overseas.

Elsewhere in the capital, the Swedish fitness craze of “plogging” – a combination of jogging and picking up litter – has become a popular weekly activity for employees of London-based shoe company, Vivobarefoot.
