President refers to death sentences held up due to delayed reports

President Maithripala Sirisena has emphasized that steps should be taken to expedite the implementation of the punishment imposed on prisoners associated with drug trafficking, if they were still involved in these rackets while in prison. At a meeting held at the Presidential secretariat, the President further stated that this should be done for the future of the nation and its future generation.

A discussion on drug trafficking and the revision of laws related to the prevention of crime have been held at the Presidential Secretariat this morning.

The President said that the decision was taken due to the failure of the relevant institutions to submit such documents in time to summon those responsible for the death penalty. The President mentioned that he intended to hold an inquiry in this respect.

Laws that suppress drug trafficking should not be weakened. The President emphasized the importance of enforcing these laws without escaping the gangs of racketeers.
Special attention was focused at this meeting on the immediate resolution of issues Police Officers had to confront when they are engaged in illegal drug raids. The progress of the decisions and agreements reached at the discussion held on the 27th of last month was reviewed at this meeting. Attention was drawn to amending the laws and regulations for the implementation of the laws considering as a flaw the non-display and the non-production of permits on the sale of drugs.

Other topics that came up for consideration at this meeting were road safety, prevention of road accidents, safety of pedestrians, standard of three wheelers and motorcycles and standardization of driving schools.
