Government MPs boycott Parliament

The parliamentarians attached to the government boycotted parliamentary sessions today as well protesting undemocratic and anti-constitutional conduct of Speaker Karu Jayasuriya.

The parliament sat at 1.00 p.m. today. The United National Front repeatedly stated that as a no-confidence motion was passed in the House they do not recognize Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse’s government. But according to a statement made by parliamentarian, Lakshman Kiriella in the House, it was confirmed that the United National Front recognizes the government led by Premier Mahinda Rajapakse.

Lakshman Kiriella pointed out that though the new government is in power for approximately one month, no order or act was passed. The statement itself of the parliamentarian stands as a tantamount for legitimacy of the government and his recognition. Making comments at the adjournment of the House, parliamentarian John Amaratunga said that Speaker is their savior.
