Prime Minister elaborates on the aim of change of Government

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has said that the President is aware that it is he who can overcome the abyss the country is facing. The Prime Minister stated that this was a temporary Government. He was clarifying to the country the purpose of the overthrow of the Government.
Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa said that during his address in Parliament on the 15th of this month he proposed to all political parties to go for a general election giving way to the sovereignty of the people. The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna agreed. But the United National Party is waiting for a Presidential election instead of a general election. The dispute is in Parliament. As such there is no opportunity for the holding of a Presidential election at this juncture. No party received a clear majority in the August General election held in 2015. The UNP got 106 seats while the United Peoples Freedom Alliance received 96 seats. The difference was only 10 seats.
The UPFA left the Government on |October 26th. The Prime Minister said that thereafter several UNP members joined them. He said that he was giving leadership to the largest group in Parliament. What they did on October 26th was the establishment of an interim Government until the elections that are being suspended by the court are held. He said this Government has no intention of continuously ruling the country. The entire country is aware that only a handful of the Joint Opposition are holding positions in this Government. But the other side wants to continue with the previous Government until its term end. This is the issue that has surfaced.
The Prime Minister pointed out that the President in his address to the nation said that he handed over the Government to him as the last solution. The Prime Minister queried whether he could stay away without accepting the position when it was handed over to him. This is not an issue of Government power but a problem of the future of the country. The President handed over the country to him due to economic crisis the country suffered.
When such a situation arises what a democratic country does is holding a general election and appointing a new Government. Since the President was in his Government he is aware how they handled difficult situations. Everyone should be aware that the government that was in power cannot handle the present situation. It was they who put the country into a difficult situation. This is why they are afraid of facing election. After the commencement of the war in 2006, the public, the professionals, trade unions, businessmen and other sectors did not do any harm to the country. This was a support for them to win the war.
Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa said that he wished to make an appeal to the public to extend support to them as they did during the period of war. He said this is the final opportunity to overcome this situation. There should be a halt to taxes and various other expenditures incurred by the previous Government including spending on foreign trips.
