Two girls die in a wild elephant attack in Mahiyangana

Two girls have been killed in a wild elephant attack. The two girls from the Mapakadawewa Rohana village in Mahiyangana were attacked by the wild elephants last night.
The wild elephants had entered a house in the Mahiyangana Mapakadawewa Rohana village at around 10.30 last night. Two girls aged 8 and 11-years had run to a nearby house to escape from the wild elephants. It was then that these two girls had come under attack.
The mother of the 11 year old child had left her during her childhood while the father is living abroad. She had been living with her aunt. The other girl is her aunt’s daughter. Villages such as Mapakadawewa Rohana, Dambagolla and Pragammana are threatened by wild elephants. The residents claim that 31 houses have so far been attacked by wild elephants.
A protest campaign had been staged by the people of the area obstructing the 20 Post along the Mahiyangana Badulla road protesting against the elephant attack.
