IGP called to investigate the crisis situation in Parliament

Several Associations have handed over a complaint to the Inspector General of Police calling for a formal investigation with respect to several crisis situations that surfaced in Parliament recently.
Several Organizations handed over the related complaint calling for the conduct of an inquiry with respect to the incidents that took place in the midst of disturbances that were experienced in Parliament during the last few days. Among them are the Lanka Self Employers Three Wheelers Federation, the All Ceylon Small Industrialists Association, the Canteen Owners Association and the Motorcyclists Association. Wide publicity was given to photographs displaying as to how Parliamentarian Palitha Thewarapperuma brought a knife to the House on the 15th of this month. It has been mentioned in this complaint that it is clear that he had brought a knife to Parliament in this crisis situation with the intention of causing harm to anyone. It amounts to the commitment of an offence under the Penal Code. As such these Associations are calling for the enforcement of the law as holding a proper inquiry.
The related Associations are also requesting the conduct of a streamlined inquiry with respect to the complaint lodged with the Police by Parliamentarian Indika Anuruddha about the threats made by Parliamentarians Ranjan Ramanayake and Palitha Thewarapperuma. It has also been mentioned in the complaint about the circulation of visuals in the media as to how Parliamentarian Prasanna Ranaweera was attacking a Police Officer who was providing security to the Speaker on the 16th of this month.
In the meantime, based on video footage revealed at a media briefing by Parliamentarian Shehan Semasinghe on the 18th of this month, the Speaker had said that he had nothing to do even if a murder took place within Parliament. This situation amounts to an enticement to a crime and it is mentioned in the complaint that this was a serious situation. As such these associations are requesting that attention be directed for the enforcement of the law after the conduct of a formal inquiry.
