Sonka soars to Air Race title with dramatic win on final day of season

Czech Martin Sonka clinched his maiden Red Bull Air Race World Championship title with a dramatic victory in Texas. Sonka entered the final weekend at Texas Motor Speedway in a three way race for the 2018 crown, five points behind American leader Michael Goulian and three points ahead of third placed Australian Matt Hall. Sonka advanced to the final four grouping along with Hall while Goulian failed to make it to the final and earned just three points for his 8th place finish completing the season with 73 points. The final four saw Hall set a time of 53.100 seconds to take the lead until Sonka, flying last, completed the course in 52.976 to win the event and clinch the championship. The victory earned the Czech pilot 15 points giving him a total 80 for the season while Hall’s second place was good for 12 points and a total of 75 on the year.
