People given the opportunity to vote and elect a government

Parliamentarians point out President Maithripala Sirisena has given the opportunity to the public to vote as it is the supreme power of democracy. They said this during a media briefing today. Minister Susil Premajayantha said that former President J.R. Jayawardena created a constitution of an executive model. According to it the President is elected by the people’s franchise. He said that the Executive power is vested with the President who is elected by the votes of the entire country. When the legislature could not handle the peoples franchise alone the Supreme Court said that a 2/3rds, majority is not enough and the people should be consulted by way of a referendum.

He said that when the 19th amendment was brought there was an attempt to entrust a part of the Executive power with the Prime Minister. He said that the Supreme Court said that the Executive Power which comes from the votes of the people in the entire country cannot be entrusted with the Prime Minister who is elected from one district. He questioned whether granting of voting rights is a breach of fundamental rights. Minister Dihesh Gunawardena said that the supreme power of an election has been given to the country which reflects the opinion of the people. He said that the election is the constitutional guarantee given to the people to protect the country and the democracy. He further said that the true basis of the decision is that there cannot be interferences into the people’s right of an election and to the supremacy of the people.
