Flash flood sweeps through Jordan’s iconic Petra

A flash flood swept through Jordan’s ancient city of Petra, forcing roughly 3,500 tourists to evacuate from the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

There were no reports of casualties from the flooding, which was caused by heavy rainfall in the area.Local guide Ahmad Atwah told Reuters that he was leading a tour group through the site when he heard a roaring sound in the distance, and upon sight of the flooding he led his group to a higher ground.

Footage uploaded by Atwah to a social media page showed the floodwater emerging from beneath a bridge, carrying debris as it raced through a channel in the city.

More videos by another eyewitness, Mohammed Kisswani, showed people watching from the bankside as floodwaters rushed by.
