Homes evacuated as wildfire near Los Angeles burns over 8,000 acres

Several fierce and wind-driven wildfires erupted across California on Thursday (November 9), including one in Ventura County just north of Los Angeles that charred at least 8,000 acres.The Ventura blaze prompted mandatory evacuations of the California State University’s Channel Islands campus, and the adjacent communities of Camarillo Springs, Dos Vientos and the Vallecito Mobile Home Park.Dubbed the Hill Fire, the blaze also forced the closure of a stretch of Highway 101, a major north-south route between Los Angeles and points north.There were no immediate reports of property damage of casualties. The cause was under investigation, according to the Ventura County Fire Department.
In the meantime Strong storms rolled across parts of the southeastern U.S. state of Georgia on Wednesday (November 7) as the National Weather Service issued a tornado and severe thunderstorm warning. Video obtained by Reuters showed strong winds blowing through an intersection in Macon, Georgia, amidst flashes of lightning in the area.
