San Diego Zoo bids farewell to China-bound Giant Panda

The San Diego Zoo said good-bye to its eldest giant panda on Tuesday (October 30) when it sent 28-year-old Gao Gao on a journey home to his birthplace in China. The news of Gao Gao’s departure came as a surprise to the public though the zoo had carefully planned logistics of the trip weeks earlier.

Zoo officials explained that tight security surrounded the panda’s return to China in an effort to keep him calm and stress-free.Gao Gao arrived on loan to the San Diego Zoo in 2003 and proved to be a successful mate for Bai Yun, a female giant panda loaned by China. The two produced five healthy cubs.As the years wore on, Gao Gao suffered various health problems such as a cancerous right testicle and a heart condition. He was retired and taken off exhibit in recent years.Due to his age and condition, the decision was made to repatriate him to live out his final years in his homeland. He is traveling with an experienced keeper and veterinarian who have cared for him for several years.
