Four die as storms, high winds batter Italy

Four people died in three separate accidents in central and southern Italy as gale-force winds brought trees crashing down onto roads. The national Civil Protection Agency issued weather warnings in many regions as storms swept much of the country, bringing torrential rains and high winds. In Genoa, northern Italy, pedestrians held onto iron railings to keep on their feet as strong winds gushed through the streets.

Meanwhile, Spanish emergency services continued to search for a man who fell into the rough seas whilst fishing from a rocky area in Camarinas in Galicia. Temperatures plummeted over the weekend in Spain when an Arctic front brought heavy rain, snow and strong wind to various parts of the peninsula. A 57-year-old man and a 43-year-old woman, reported missing in the Pyrenees where they were hiking, were located by emergency services.

In the wake of the torrential rains and stormy weather which hit parts of southern Austria over the past few days, the water level in the Drava river rose to a 30-year high. The water level led to the evacuation more than 60 people in an area in the town of Lavamuend in Carinthia, on the border with Slovenia, and put the local rescue services on alert as the rains are expected to continue into today. The rains, accompanied with gale force winds of up to 120 kilometres per hour.
