16th World Scrabble Champion crowned at London finals

Nigel Richards from New Zealand was crowned World Scrabble Champion in London in the game’s 70th Anniversary year. After competing against hundreds of elite Scrabble players from 25 countries in 36 games, Nigel beat Jesse Day from the United States by 575 to 452 points in a fourth round final and was declared champion. One crucial word played during the final was “zonular,” which means ‘like a zone’ and scored Richards 100 points. Richards has won three World Scrabble Championships in 2007, 2011 and 2013 as well as two French language World Championship titles from 2015 and 2018.
