Rat control needed to help vulnerable coral reefs

Wild rats are a problem in urban towns and cities world-wide, feeding on food scraps, getting into homes, and spreading disease. But they’re also causing huge damage to the world’s embattled coral reefs.

Professor Nick Graham of Lancaster University says the rodents, which arrived on many remote tropical islands onboard ships more than 200 years ago, need to be wiped out to help reefs recover. The scientists found guano to be crucial to the functioning of tropical ecosystems.

Leading a team of researchers, Graham visited the Chagos Archipelago in the central Indian Ocean.
