Chinese premier and Japan’s Abe praise relations on first day of landmark China visit

Growing business ties and praising relations was at the centre of a meeting between China and Japan. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, on his first formal bilateral summit with Chinese leaders in seven years, met with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang in Beijing as the two countries marked 40 years of the Sino-Japan Treaty of Peace and Friendship. His three-day visit to China is expected to carve out new scope for cooperation between Asia’s two biggest economies. It is also expected to promote trust, which has been fragile at times since they restored diplomatic relations in 1972. Abe, who returned to power in 2012 when Sino-Japanese ties were in tatters due to a feud over East China Sea islands.
