At least 18 people, mostly children, die in flash flood in Jordan

At least 18 people have been killed in flash floods near the Dead Sea in Jordan, most of them in a bus that was swept away. The bus was carrying 37 pupils and seven members of staff to the Zara Maeen hot springs area when it was washed away. A huge rescue operation has been launched and Israel said it had sent helicopters at Jordan’s request. So far 34 people have been rescued from the area. Some of them are said to be in a serious condition.
Meanwhile, at least 16 people were killed in an air strike that hit a factory for vegetable packaging in Yemen’s Hodeidah province. A Saudi-led coalition that intervened in Yemen’s war in 2015 has conducted frequent air strikes targeting the Iran-aligned Houthi group and has often hit civilians, although it denies doing so intentionally. Medics and residents in Bayt al-Faqih, a town 70 km south of Hodeidah city.
