Enhancementof showery condition to some extent over South-western part

The Department of Meteorology has announced that the enhancement of showery condition to some extent over South-western part of the Island is expected to continue today too. The Disaster Management Centre has informed the public in the hill country to be cautious about landslides.
Deputy Director of the Disaster Management Centre Pradeep Kodippili said that according to the statement issued by the National Building and Research Organization the warning issued for the Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Matale Districts is still valid. According to the weather forecast issued by the Department of Meteorology, showery conditions will prevail in the Central, Sabaragamuwa and Uva Provinces as well as in the Galle, Matara and Kalutara Districts. It stated that this may further enhance tomorrow. He warned the public to be cautious about landslide threats. He added that all data has been updated on contact number 117.
The Pelmadulla Bulugahatenna Dandeniya Mountain has been subject to a landslide. As such families living in about 40 houses has been evacuated. A landslide occurred in the Dandeniya Mountain in the early hours of today. Action was taken to evacuate forty families following the fall of a large rock near the houses. Even the Bulugahatenna Vidyalaya has been temporarily closed. Residents in the area said that measures were taken to apprise the officials in advance in this respect.
A wall erected around the garbage recycling dump in Bandarawela had collapsed following the torrential rain experienced in the area due to a landslide. A section about 15 metres below this centre had been subject to a landslide, thus inconveniencing around 150 families.
Several shops along the road in the lower Kadugannawa area on the Colombo Kandy Road had been damaged due to a fallen tree. Action has been taken to clear the road. The Police said that as a result the road in the lower Kadugannawa area along the Colombo Kandy area had to be closed from time to time.
Meanwhile, one person has been killed due to lightening in the Kawuduluwewa area in Hingurakgoda. Two others have been hospitalized due to a shock. The victim was a 25-year-old youth residing in the Yudaganawa area in Hingurakgoda. He was struck by lightning while fishing in a boat.
