Sun, sea and microplastics: French Riviera hit by plastic pollution

French scientists believe that microplastics are now widespread in the Mediterranean, posing significant health, environmental and economic risks.A long-term study by the National Centre for Scientific Research Sea Institute in Villefranche-sur-Mer found a concentration of 600,000 plastics per square kilometre in the area. The closer to human settlements, the higher the concentration of plastics, the study found.Marine biologist Maria-Luiza Pedrotti led the research, sampling water from the French Riveria between Nice and Cap Ferrat in the south of France.

Research involved taking the samples with a Manta trawl net, towed at the top 10 cm of the sea surface, picking out the floating plastic debris, and counting the plastic items and measuring them by imaging analysis. Pedrotti, who has conducted research on the Tara research expedition in the Mediterranean, said 90 percent of the plastic polymers found in samples were polyethelene and polypropelene, which are components found in packaging.
