Storing capacity of the Paddy Marketing Board expanded

The government has decided to expand storage capacity of the Paddy Marketing Board. Accordingly, new storages will be established in Beliatta and Mee-gaha-jandura.

The cabinet of Ministers has granted its approval to construct the storage complex to store 2,000 metric tons of paddy. In addition, 39 old facilities will also be given a facelift to store purchased paddy.

Meanwhile, the cabinet has granted its approval to obtain re-insurance for insurance scheme which was introduced in 2016 for natural disasters related damages. The insurance scheme kicked off in 2016 has already provided 15 billion rupees to victims of the natural disasters as compensation. The re-insurance strategy will help to minimize the risk for the insurance scheme.

The cabinet approved the proposed update for the terminal management system of Jaya and Samagi container terminals of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority.

Meanwhile, the approval was also granted to implement Colombo-Beliatta railway operation from next year. Accordingly, 54 access roads will be constructed linking the railway route.

The cabinet has endorsed the proposal to set up a Tamil medium school in the Kelaniya Educational Zone. The school, named ‘A Manikka Vasagam Hindu College’, will accommodate students from Tamil speaking families living in Gampaha and Wattala areas.

Cabinet approval has been granted to digitize the X-ray system of the government hospitals. Accordingly, 50 analog X-ray machines will be converted to digital. The government has also decided to purchase 50 new digital X-ray machines.

Sri Lanka and Saudi Arabia will enter into an agreement to avert double taxing and cut evading income taxes.

The cabinet endorsed the extra ordinary gazette notification on prohibited drugs for the sportsmen and women that is to be tabled in Parliament. The gazette notification complies with the international guidelines on the prohibited substances. Meanwhile, the gazette notification published under the Value Added Tax was also given approval to be presented in the House.
