Hindu devotees walk on fire at India’s Theemithi festival

Hindu devotees celebrated the annual firewalking festival of Theemithi at the Ujjaini Mahakali Temple in Rameswaram, southern India. Devotees walked barefoot across a ceremonial pit of hot coals in order to receive a wish or blessing from the Hindu Goddess Draupadi from the epic Mahabharata. The festival is celebrated during the month of Aipasi of the Tamil calendar and a week before the Hindu festival of lights Diwali. Theemithi is also celebrated in Sri Lanka, Malayasia, Singapore and other countries with a large number of people of Tamil ethnicity.
