Astronomers detect enormous group of galaxies allowing for study of “adolescent” universe

Astronomers detected the largest and densest cluster of galaxies recorded so far, a huge structure in formation in the young universe that emerged just two billion years after the Big Bang. The structure was named Hyperion by the researchers and was discovered through the group of long-range telescopes VLT that the European Southern Observatory (ESO) maintains in Chile’s northern Atacama Desert.Scientists explained that there are other groups of galaxies – also called superclusters of galaxies – farther in time and close to the Big Bang, but none of the size of Hyperion.Due to its size at such an early time in the history of the universe, Hyperion could evolve similarly to the great structures of the local universe such as the Virgo Supercluster, where the Milky Way is located, ESO explained in a statement.

The team of astronomers who made the discovery was led by Olga Cucciati, from the National Institute of Astrophysics in Bologna. The “Very Large Telescope” (VLT) is a set of four large telescopes with mirrors and four auxiliary telescopes located under the clear skies of the Atacama Desert.
