Piloting a drone using your body’s movements

Swiss-based scientists have developed a jacket embedded with motion sensors that turn the movement of the body into a controller for flying objects, like drones. Using torso movements is more intuitive and precise than traditional hand-held joysticks, according to researchers from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne. Unmanned aerial vehicles are now routinely deployed during search and rescue missions to survey vast areas much faster than ground-based teams. Using their body-machine-interface technology, the team says, is easier to learn and requires less concentration, meaning attention can be focused on the mission. They started by monitoring the body movements of 17 individuals using infrared markers placed on the upper body.
