Wildcard stuns in surfing and throws open World Surf League

Australian wildcard Ryan Callinan produced a stunning performance in the World Surf League to throw the overall title contest wide open.Callinan, who received a replacement wildcard for being the best non-CT surfer in the Qualifying Series, eliminated current men’s leader Filipe Toledo, leaving Gabriel Medina with a golden opportunity to overtake his fellow Brazilian in the overall standings.Toledo did appear to have all under control when he scored the event’s best ride, a 9.00 (out of a possible 10), and followed that up with a 7.60.But his Australian rival fought back and scored 7.93 and an 8.87 to send Toledo out of the competition in Seignosse, France.Toledo’s closest rival, Medina, was victorious against another Brazilian, Wiggolly Dantas in the following heat.
